ABSTRACT

Over the past several years, there has been an increased interest in pavement preservation. However, when surveying various agencies and organizations, there is no one single definition of pavement preservation. This workshop will begin with a discussion on pavement preservation and will then move into various flexible pavement maintenance treatments that fall under the pavement preservation umbrella. A key part of many flexible pavement maintenance treatments is asphalt emulsions. While the primary component of asphalt emulsions is asphalt binder, there are many unique characteristics of asphalt emulsions. This workshop will continue with a very broad overview of asphalt emulsion and will then move into how asphalt emulsion is used in flexible pavement maintenance. Next, the workshop will cover asphalt emulsion quality control and testing, and best practices for specifying asphalt emulsion-based treatments. Finally, the workshop will include information on how to properly inspect the construction of asphalt emulsion treatments.
