As an intern, Michael assisted with the development of a data collecting system that can be installed onto a roadway vehicle. The vehicle is driven over city streets, bridges and highways at up to 60mph to collect a high resolution 3D image of the road surface. The vehicle collects other data while doing this to get a grand picture of the road surface and its environment. At the lab, several employees are working on software to improve the data collection system. The WayLink system as a whole presents a unique engineering challenge in several different fields of engineering including but not limited to civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and software engineering.
